Water System Flushing & Information

What You Need To know About Your Water

It's Important to flush your water pipes after being absent from your home.

If your home was built before 1987 lead solder may have been used to connect your copper pipes. The longer water sits in pipes better the chance you may develop lead and copper in your water.  Let the water run from the tap before using it for drinking or cooking. Any time water in the faucet has gone unused for more than six hours, flush the tap by running the cold-water faucet until the water is noticeably colder, usually about 15-30 seconds. Toilet flushing and showering moves water through a portion of your home's plumbing system however, you still need to flush the water in each faucet before using it for drinking or cooking.

The East Hills Reservoir and pump station is now on line to help with the new schools and to feed water to the Cooper and Broadway Hills additions. This will allow us to store an additional 2 million gallons in that area for fire protection and in case of a major event. The tank is protected with seismic valving that will shut the Reservoir off if there is a break in the water main below the tank.  The booster station pumps water to the tank as needed and provides fire protection for the schools and surrounding areas. This has allowed us to eliminate the Cooper and Broadway booster stations.

We start flushing fire hydrants on the east side of Roosevelt every year beginning in the spring. If you experience dirty water during this time, run your cold-water until it clears. The bathtub can be used to flush your system but use cold water only. Do not run the hot water as the dirty water can get into your hot water heater and may be difficult to remove. If your water does not clear after a couple of minutes  please call the Water Department at 503-738-5112.
