SPD Lieutenant Graduates from FBI Academy

Seaside, Ore. – September 14, 2022 – On Wednesday, September 14, 2022, Seaside Police Chief Dave Ham announced that Lieutenant Guy Knight has graduated as a member of the 283rd session of the FBI National Academy. The graduation took place at the National Academy in Quantico, Virginia on September 13, 2022. Lt. Guy KnightLt. Knight is the third officer in department history to complete this prestigious program. Nationally, fewer than one percent of officers have the opportunity to attend the program. Previous graduates from the Seaside Police Department include Chief Ham (2011) and retired Chief Robert Gross (1995).

Internationally known for its academic excellence, the National Academy offers ten weeks of advanced communication, leadership, and fitness training. Participants must have proven records as professionals within their agencies to attend. On average, these officers have 21 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions.

The 283rd session consisted of 235 law enforcement officers from 49 states and the District of Columbia. The class included members of law enforcement agencies from 21 countries, five military organizations, and five federal and civilian agencies.

“Lieutenant Knight has exhibited an excellent commitment to law enforcement, growth and leadership throughout his tenure as a member of the Seaside Police Department,” stated Chief Ham. “We appreciate the work he has put in to graduate from the Academy and look forward to having him back in Seaside and utilizing what he learned to aid our department for many years to come.”

Lt. Knight joined the Seaside Police Department September 2009, attained the rank of Sergeant in November 2012, and promoted to Lieutenant in December 2020. Prior to his most recent appointment, Lt. Knight served as the Sergeant Detective for the department from October 2015 to October 2020. Lt. Knight is a graduate of Astoria High School and is married with three children.

The SPD is a department within the municipal government structure of the City of Seaside, Oregon. A department of 29, the Police Department employees a Chief, Lieutenant, five Sergeants and a communications manager (9-1-1 Dispatch). The department operates with a patrol unit, detective’s unit, school resource officer, a community service officer and 9-1-1 dispatch services.

About the FBI National Academy
FBI Academy instructors, special agents, and other staff with advanced degrees provide the training; many instructors are recognized internationally in their fields. Since 1972, National Academy students have been able to earn undergraduate and graduate credits from the University of Virginia, which accredits many of the courses offered. A total of 53,671 graduates have completed the FBI National Academy since it began in 1935. The National Academy is held at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, the same facility where the FBI trains its new special agents and intelligence analysts.
