Seaside Public Library Board Declines Reconsideration Requests

City of Seaside News Release

SEASIDE, Ore. – Jan. 3, 2024 – Following a thorough review process and public meeting, the Seaside Public Library Board has voted unanimously to retain two books that were subject to recent Requests for Reconsideration because they do not violate the library’s Collection Development Policy.

The vote to keep “And Tango Makes Three” and “When Aidan Became a Brother” in the collection came after a special Library Board Work Session on Tuesday, Jan. 2 in accordance with library policy and procedures. The two books were ultimately found to align with the library’s commitment to providing a diverse selection that caters to the needs of the broader community.

“The collection development at the Seaside Public Library is founded on the principles of intellectual freedom, equal access for all, and the preservation of the documentary record of culture,” said Library Director Jennifer Reading, quoting the library’s policy during the meeting.

Since its opening in 1913, the Seaside Public Library has been a First Amendment institution, providing a collection that balances viewpoints across a broad spectrum of opinion and subject matter. This includes the needs of special population groups. According to its collections policy, “no materials will be excluded because of race, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and political or social view of the material or author.”

The library strives to be a safe and supportive environment for patrons in the community, especially the young. The library actively encourages parents to participate in selecting reading materials for their children and provides age-appropriate content guidance.

The Seaside Library Board, appointed by the Seaside City Council, is responsible for upholding the mission and policies of the Seaside Public Library. A recording of the meeting can be found here on the City of Seaside Oregon YouTube page.
